Something's definitely afoot in the rarefied world of early music when teenagers start relating to the spare music of medieval monasteries. "Chant," a compact disc of Gregorian chants by the Benedictine monks of Santo Domingo de Silos, Spain, will be released next month in the United States, with the MTV generation targeted as a likely audience.

Perhaps paving the way for the monks' invasion are pop artists Enigma, who are turning out their second album fusing medieval chants, new age noodling and a funky techno beat.
