Article: Texas, Texas Tech Decide To Join Big 8 Conference

AUSTIN, Texas The University of Texas and Texas Tech today decided to join the Big Eight Conference, severing ties with the 80-year-old Southwest Conference.

The boards of regents from both schools voted unanimously following the lead of similar votes at Texas A & M and Baylor earlier this week.

Texas Chancellor William Cunningham said the decision was painful, but necessary. It took the regents 12 minutes to cast their votes.

"The University of Texas has been concerned about the long-term viability about the Southwest Conference for some time," Cunningham said.
