The Weimar Republic, Germany's failed attempt at post-World War
I democracy, struggled for survival through a decade and a half of
acute economic, political and social crises. Heir to a devastating
military defeat and humiliating treaty, it was an era of extreme
indulgence and profound suffering, rocked by uncontrolled inflation,
violent labor strikes and government corruption.
Yet this deeply troubled time also gave birth to an artistic
