In polka music's brief history as a Grammy category, its artists
have squeezed out some levity in what can become a self-indulgent
event. But that doesn't mean that when the Grammy Awards are given
out Tuesday night, you'll see any polka artists scampering up to pick
up their trophies. They're still given off the air.
The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences first
recognized polka in 1985, and memorable nominees included former
Chicagoans like Lil' Wally's "Polskie Czucie, Polish Feeling" and
Lenny Gomulka and the Chicago Push's "Simply Polkamentary."
This year's favorites include Chicago's own Eddie Blazonczyk's
Versatones, who earned their seventh Grammy nomination for "A ...
