The German sculptor, teacher and performer Joseph Beuys is one
of the most controversial figures in 20th century art. Like Marcel
Duchamp and Andy Warhol, he crafted a personal myth that binds
together his entire body of work. For Beuys, art and life had no
distinct boundaries. His life, in fact, was his masterwork, a kind
of "Gesamtkunstwerk," or total work of art.
A notorious provocateur and enfant terrible, he is most often
remembered for the curious sculptures he made with fat and felt. He
