Uruguay 1930: The First
Soccer's first World Cup was awarded to Uruguay because it offered
to pay all traveling expenses for European teams and build a
100,000-seat Stadium. But Uruguay's 4-2 victory over Argentina in
the final capped a questionable world title.
Only four European teams chose to make the three-week boat trip
to Montevideo, and France, Romania, Belgium and Yugoslavia were
hardly world powers. Nonetheless, fans in Uruguay took to the
streets dancing, while disgruntled Argentines pelted the Uruguayan
embassy in Buenos Aires with rocks.
