One of the most impressive aspects of British conductor
Christopher Hogwood is the level of quality he maintains in each of
his many and diverse musical projects.
In London, Hogwood serves as the music director of the Academy
of Ancient Music, a superb historic-instrument orchestra (which will
perform Friday at Orchestra Hall in Chicago).
In Boston, he directs the venerable Handel and Haydn Society,
which, under his direction, is at the cutting edge of 18th-century
"authenticity"; the society performs on violins, violas and cellos
with gut strings, valveless horns and trumpets, and oboes that look
like recorders - all tuned to a pitch lower than today's standard.
