PRETORIA The South African government, in an unprecedented move,
announced today that it no longer recognized Lucas Mangope as
president of Bophuthatswana black homeland.
Foreign Minister Pik Botha went to the Bophuthatswana capital
Mmabatho to tell Mangope he was in effect fired, the SAPA news agency
said.
In a statement, Botha told SAPA that the South African
ambassador to the homeland, Tjaart van der Walt, had "as an interim
measure, been placed in charge of the administration of the
territory."
The measure came after days of chaos in Bophuthatswana, which
prompted Mangope first to announce that he would contest South
Africa's first all-race election next month, and then to tell ...
