Article: Property Tax Payers Are Treated Unfairly

Bravo to Mark Hornung's Feb. 23 column "Unfair Tax System Irks Businessman" for revealing bureaucratic buffoonery at its rawest in Cook County's property tax system.

As Chicago property owners we have housed dozens of growing businesses since 1970. After we weathered five reassessments, the last 1991 reassessment almost put us out of business. Fortunately, we received some relief in our property tax appeal, unlike Joe Hodges, whom Hornung wrote about.

Hodges' ordeal is a property owner's worst tax nightmare! In 1992 he bought his property for $120,000. After the 1993 reassessment, followed by an appeal to the assessor, the market value was reset at $270,800. Based on that inflated ...
