WASHINGTON Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun, in helping a friend who lived
with her while she was a state representative, cashed a check mailed
to her home as part of the friend's $29,728 state consulting
contract.
Moseley-Braun, through her attorney, and the friend, Ronald W.
Killebrew, both said she did not receive any money from the Illinois
Transportation Department contract, which could have been a violation
of the state's purchasing act.
The purchasing act says it is unlawful for a person holding
elective office to "have or acquire any contract" in which the
office-holder has direct or indirect financial interest, unless the
governor grants a waiver.
