Article: Black Music Ensemble to Honor King

If all goes well in decades to come, two of Chicago's most worthwhile music organizations - the Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College and American Women Composers' Midwest Chapter - will be able to go out of business.

There won't be any need for groups devoted to discovering, promoting and performing classical music by black and female composers because the best of that music would have moved into the standard repertoire. American concert audiences will encounter symphonies by William Grant Still and chamber pieces by Amy Beach as a matter of course. The idea of concerts highlighting black or female composers will seem faintly old-fashioned.

That day is not yet here, so ...
