After a school tax referendum failed in Chicago Heights in March, students and parents complained in letters to local newspapers of the "selfish and shortsighted" opposition of many voters, particularly senior citizens.

Rejection of the tax hike, they fumed, could force the fiscally strapped Bloom Township High School District 206 to curtail sports and extracurricular activities.

Yet many senior citizens say it isn't fair to blame them for voting against higher taxes, especially because they've been supporting schools for generations.
