Ants might not be the smartest things on six legs but, with 50
million years' experience in foraging for food, they know a tasty
morsel when they see it.
"When man built a house, heated it and put food in it, it
naturally followed that others would want to share it with him," said
Dr. Bernard Greenberg, professor emeritus of biological sciences at
the University of Illinois at Chicago.
"There are about 400 different species of ants and, outside of
raiding the pantry, most do no harm to the house itself."
The exceptions - and the pests that can quite literally eat you
out of house and home - are the black carpenter ant and the termite,
or "white ant," said Greenberg.
