WASHINGTON The number of Caesarean sections done in the United
States has begun to drop after years of rising, and a study released
Wednesday finds that a new willingness to try delivering the second
baby vaginally could be the reason.
According to the study by the consumer watchdog group Public
Citizen, 22.6 percent of all U.S. births in 1992 were C-sections,
down slightly from 22.7 percent in 1990. The rate peaked in 1988 at
24.7 percent. C-sections are among the most common operations in the
United States.
In Illinois, the statewide rate in 1992 fell just under the
national average, at 21.9 percent. In Chicago, Louis A. Weiss
