When it comes to a summer job, some college kids are looking for more than a tan and a paycheck.

Why settle for lifeguarding or housepainting, they figure, when they could be making serious money on an Alaskan fishing boat, tending bar in London or monitoring elections in Mozambique?

Students also take jobs with careers in mind, knowing that "How I spent my summer vacation" may look good on a resume some day. Here are the stories of some adventurous workers.

Renee Richer has spent summers tracking black bears in North Carolina and musk oxen in Alaska. After graduating from the University of Chicago next month, she's off to Zimbabwe to study the Cape pangolin, a variety of anteater.
