This time, the early morning footsteps on the stairs below could
be coming for her, a 17-year-old Jew hiding from the Holocaust in a
Place Pigalle hotel in Paris.
Or it could be, as so often before, the sound of the Germans
coming for the deserters hiding among the prostitutes who occupied
the hotel's lower floors.
Instead, it was someone with the news: "They have landed."
D-Day still has great personal meaning for Michelle, now a south
suburban resident. Before she returned last week to Europe to
commemorate that day and the liberation of Paris, she agreed to let
me tell her story but not use her real name. It's still too
personal.
