Soaring assessments for retail businesses helped spur the biggest
jump in nearly a decade for property values in Charles County's most
developed area, according to figures released by state and county
taxing agencies.
Property values rose an average of 6.6 percent in the Waldorf and
White Plains area, the portion of the county included in the current
round of assessments. Assessors divide the county into three zones,
revisiting each zone once every three years.
About one-third of the properties in the current zone are
commercial enterprises, and their values rose an average of 11.3
