It's been a year since a 22-year-old Indiana University student
named Jared Fogle burst on the scene touting his Subway Diet, through
which he lost 245 pounds. For those who missed it, Fogle's secret
weapon was the no-frills, low-fat submarine sandwich available at
Subway restaurants. He ate two a day, along with a bag of chips, lots
of diet soda -- and nothing else. Within a year, he was less than
half the 425-pound man he used to be.
And every Subway sandwich shop in America had a laminated counter
card showing before-and-after pictures of Jared, with a caption
telling how the weight was lost.
Now Fogle's success has spawned a fleet of followers whom Subway
