Article: Notre Dame Joins Big East // All Sports Except Football Will Play in Conference

SOUTH BEND, Ind. Notre Dame will join the Big East Conference in all sports except football in July, 1995, it was announced today.

Notre Dame was approved by a unanimous vote of the Big East's 12 members, including recent additions West Virginia and Rutgers, according to a written statement from the Rev. Donald J. Harrington, president of St. John's Univeristy and chairman of the Big East presidents.

Notre Dame has been a member of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, a non-football conference, in every sport but basketball. The school's decision to join the Big East means Notre Dame will give up its independent basketball status for the first time.
