Article: White House Backs National ID Card

NEW YORK The United States, in a response to its inability to control illegal immigration, may soon ask every American to carry a national identity card that would be required when applying for work or social benefits, CBS-TV reported Tuesday.

Called an "Employee Verification Registration," the card would include a photograph, a magnetic strip with vital information, a verified social security number and possibly fingerprints, CBS said.

The card could be proposed by the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform, a bipartisan group that CBS said has already discussed the concept with the White House, which tentatively endorses the idea.
