The flight of more than a million Rwandans from their country is a reminder that a refugee is a victim of human cruelty - it's someone compelled to cross an international border with no guarantee of returning home.

Earthquakes and floods do not cause refugees, humans do. Usual causes are war or other political, racial or religious strife.

In this century there have been, in addition to two world wars, dozens of instances in which huge numbers of refugees have fled their homelands. Counts vary, but these are instances since World War II in which there have been a million or more refugees:
