Chevrolet knew the sporty history of its popular Monte Carlo coupe, which it foolishly dropped in 1988, would help sell the 1995 version of the car.

Chevy also knew that getting the back-from-the-dead Monte Carlo's price right would be crucial to selling it in high numbers.

The automaker has gotten the price right by making the new "Monte" not an all-new car, but a racy two-door coupe version of its revamped, high-value, $15,470-$16,970 front-wheel-drive 1995 Lumina four-door sedan.

That's a much more economical approach than building an all-new coupe. Thus, the front-drive Monte Carlo, which always was a rear-drive model, stickers at only $16,770 for the base LS model and at $18,970 ...
