Article: New U.S. Science Policy Drops Cold War Rationale

WASHINGTON The Clinton administration Wednesday announced a new national science policy that pledges to maintain "world leadership in basic science, mathematics and engineering."

The new policy comes at a time when many researchers fear that American science is in danger of losing its international preeminence in science and technology.

It was the first such statement since the Carter presidency and it moves away from what had been a major rationale for government support of science for 50 years: winning the Cold War.
