Article: Breast Cancer Research Close to Breakthrough // Scientists Hope To Pinpoint Specific Gene

Scientists who are trying to nail down the cause of breast cancer that runs in families are on the verge of identifying a cancer gene, experts say.

Their work could throw light on why the disease sometimes traces strong patterns, as in the family of lieutenant governor candidate Penny Severns.

Severns, whose younger sister died from the disease and whose twin sister also battled it, found a lump in her left breast after a March mammogram apparently missed it. The lump was removed July 28 and found to be malignant.

Doctors then found that the cancer had spread to three lymph nodes.
