WASHINGTON Chicago and other local governments in Illinois
will be able to dip into a pool of federal money with the new
anti-crime bill, but must find the cash to ante matching funds to get
more police officers.
"We'll get more police officers, which we need," said Mayor
Daley, anticipating passage Thursday night of legislation that gives
cities and states vast discretion in shaping crime fighting programs.
"And secondly it will give us money for good treatment
programs . . . and thirdly good prevention programs," Daley said.
According to Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun (D-Ill.), local
governments in Illinois overall could share an estimated $360 million
for community policing ...
