ALBANY, N.Y. The prospect of covering the territory between Albany
and Syracuse might not produce shivers of excitement.
You've got the rolling foothills of the Adirondacks, with their
shimmering stands of poplars interspersed with stolid herds of Jersey
cows and weedy little crossroads with names like Wampsville and
Oriskany. That's all nice.
But a very famous route runs from here to there. And you can
always tell your neighbor, you can always tell your pal, if you've
ever navigated on the Erie Canal.
Before my recent navigation, I fortified myself with a healthful
lunch at Mansion Hill Inn, a small hotel in Albany, the Erie Canal's
