`As I stumble across the years of my life," writes Marlon
Brando, "trying to recall what it was about, I find that nothing is
really clear."
The reader is warned by that first sentence: This vaunted
autobiography picks and chooses what it wants to talk about; it never
justifies its own mythic subtitle; and it does not help us understand
why or how Brando has been the actor most admired by other actors -
let alone audiences. Instead there's a kind of undertone of
complaint - Why are you making me do this?
What has the world done to deserve Marlon Brando's dogged
