Article: Park District Talks To Puerto Ricans on Settling Statue Suit

The Chicago Park District is "exploring a resolution" with a group trying to erect a statue of a Puerto Rican nationalist in Humboldt Park, a lawyer for the district said Wednesday.

The attempt to honor Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos languished for nine months while U.S. District Judge Ann C. Williams considered a motion to dismiss the suit brought by supporters of Albizu Campos against the Park District board.

Earlier this month, Williams tossed out claims that the board's rejection of a donated $35,000, six-foot bronze statue of the independence-minded activist was based on race or ethnicity. However, she ruled that there was cause to let the case go to trial on the issue of free speech.
