Article: Historic Arts Club Building To Meet the Wrecking Ball

The atmosphere in the audience at the end of a recent Landmarks Commission committee meeting was morguelike.

Preservationists had made, and apparently lost, their case for an 11th-hour reprieve for the Arts Club, 109 E. Ontario, a site slated for redevelopment as part of a new North Michigan Avenue commercial block.

A last-minute scramble to save the Mies van der Rohe-designed club - the impending doom of which is felt throughout international architectural circles - seems to have become another example of Chicago's attitude problem when it comes to historic buildings.

City planners and preservationists alike were unaware that a demolition permit already had been issued for the site ...
