Article: Arts Club Loses Survival Bid // City Panel Refuses To Bar Demolition Of Historic Site

The Landmarks Commission took a pass Wednesday on trying to save the Arts Club from the wrecking ball, adding fuel to an international outcry threatening to paint Chicago as a home of architectural philistines.

Despite an impassioned meeting - that had to be moved from City Hall to the Cultural Center because of an overflow crowd favoring preservation of the site at 109 E. Ontario - the outcome seemed set from the start.

A City Hall source had predicted confidently that a majority of six on the panel would vote to deny landmark status to the club, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The prediction was off: The final vote was 7-0, with two abstentions.
