LONDON Britain appears headed for talks by Christmas with the
IRA's political allies after ministers Thursday all but accepted the
guerrillas' seven-week-old cease-fire in Northern Ireland as
permanent.
Government officials said Prime Minister John Major got
approval from senior ministers at a Cabinet subcommittee meeting to
start "talks about talks" whenever he sees fit.
Major, who will meet Irish Prime Minister Albert Reynolds
Monday to take stock of recent developments, has refused to talk to
Sinn Fein until he is sure that the IRA has ended its violent 25-year
battle to oust Britain from Northern Ireland.
