HOLLYWOOD To moviegoers, Raul Julia was Gomez, the amorous ghoul in "The Addams Family" and the tormented South American political prisoner in "Kiss of the Spider Woman."

And to theatergoers, he was Mack the Knife at New York's Lincoln Center; Guido Contini, the sexy Italian film director in the musical "Nine," and, most vividly, a good-humored Petruchio to Meryl Streep's Kate in "The Taming of the Shrew."

Mr. Julia, who died Monday in New York at age 54, was also one of the first Puerto Ricans to star on Broadway, but his talent was such that he was hardly ever typecast (he played an Englishman on Broadway in 1980 in Harold Pinter's "Betrayal").
