NEW YORK, Jan. 17 -- For 170 years, Gramercy Park has been an
oasis of Victorian charm and peace amid Manhattan's cacophonous
crowds. New York City's last private park, it is accessible only to
surrounding property owners who hold keys to its locked iron gates.
Exclusivity is its calling card. The Gramercy Park Republican Club
rhapsodizes that it is "a symbol of private ownership dear to
Republicans everywhere." Key holders have included Roosevelts,
Kennedys, Mark Twain, Washington Irving and, more recently, Julia
Roberts and Winona Ryder. A few weeks ago, Goldie Hawn co-signed her
actress-daughter Kate Hudson's contract for a Gramercy Park co-op,
