Article: Symphony Supporters: Don't Push Cliff Dwellers from Nest

An open letter to donors to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra:

I am a member of the Cliff Dwellers, a club that has occupied rooms on the roof of Orchestra Hall since 1909. We call our rooms the "Kiva," with a nod to the original cliff dwellers of the American southwest. The clubrooms are not structurally part of Orchestra Hall, but were designed and built at the expense of the early members. One of those members was Louis Sullivan, who worked and sometimes slept on the premises. The club has never been a "business club"; most members are writers, artists, architects, musicians, or are actively interested in such arts.
