MOSCOW A member of Russia's parliament has died after being
beaten in an apparent robbery attempt. He was the second legislator
this year to fall victim to Moscow's rising crime rate.
Valentin Martemyanov, 62, a lawyer and Communist Party legislator,
was severely beaten on the head outside his apartment house on
Tuesday. He had been elected to the State Duma, the 450-member lower
house of parliament, last December.
Another Duma member, Andrei Aidzerdzis, was shot to death in an
apparent contract killing last April. That case, still unsolved by
police, prompted angry calls by Duma opposition members for the
resignation of Interior Minister Viktor Yerin, who heads the national
