Article: U.S. Stance Alarms Allies // Ships Won't Stop Arms To Bosnia

The Muslim-led government in Sarajevo is hailing the U.S. decision to stop blocking Bosnia-bound arms shipments in the Adriatic Sea, but European allies are dismayed because they say the move could escalate the Balkan war and scar U.S.-European relations.

Officials in Washington and Europe appeared to agree on one thing at least: The U.S. policy change, effective at midnight Saturday, is unlikely to provide any material boost to Bosnia's under-gunned army, which has received most of its arms imports by air.

Of 42,000 vessels challenged in the Adriatic by NATO ships during the last two years, only three were found to be ferrying arms to Bosnia, according to the Pentagon.
