Article: Photographer Helps Shed Light on Role Models

Bruce Caines, professional New York photographer, had this idea about youngsters and role models:

There are lots of youngsters, but there never seem to be enough good role models for them. Especially role models who are more approachable than, say, sports superstars on TV.

Maybe, thought the 35-year-old Caines, the role models are there but the kids don't think to identify with them.

The result of Caines' idea is his recently published book, Our Common Ground: Portraits of Blacks Changing the Face of America (Crown, $35 hardcover; $20 paperback.)

It's filled with Caines' photos of black role models across the country and his interviews with them.
