Article: `Cliff Dwellers' Appeal to Save Club

An increasingly nasty battle over Chicago's fabled Cliff Dwellers Club spilled into the Landmarks Commission on Wednesday as preservationists argued that Orchestra Hall renovation plans would gut the club's penthouse "kiva."

Plans to extend elevators and air conditioning into the space designed by architectural luminaries Daniel Burnham and Howard Van Doren Shaw and turn it into a dining area for symphony donors would destroy its historic aspects, argued club member Wilbert Hasbrouck.

No action was recommended by the commission's program committee, whose members said the issue could be examined further as part of plans for a new South Michigan Avenue historic district.
