The revitalization of 20th century sculpture has meant, for many
artists, the return to figures, although not necessarily to realism.
Nowhere is the vitality of this return more evident than in the work
of Barry Flanagan, English sculptor and reconstructed abstractionist.
Flanagan's current show at the Richard Gray Gallery is a tour de
force of bronze-cast figurative sculpture that completely transcends
the weightiness the medium implies. The work is light, airy,
mysterious, funny and, as strange as this sounds, almost linear.
