JASPER, Alberta It's a Christmas card in the Canadian Rockies.
Garlands of lights wrap tall spruce trees by Jasper Park Lodge,
beaming night rainbows across the snow. Families whoosh down the
slopes of Marmot Basin and other ski areas, spraying clouds of fresh
powder with every turn. Herds of elk, antlers decked with snow,
promenade along ski trails and beside highways like ghosts from last
summer's scenes.
"How come elks don't have red noses like Rudolph?" a child
asks.
"Sometimes, when it's very cold, their noses do turn red,"
responds a quick-thinking dad.
Over at Lake Louise, a horse-drawn sleigh, bells ajingling,
winds along a path framed with snow-frosted evergreens. Children ...
