So much had gone so terribly wrong for D.C. United last year -- from the loss of its investors and the sale of its Herndon headquarters to a club-worst 8-18-6 record and no playoff appearance - - there was perhaps no way to truly measure the significance of United's dramatic 2-1 victory over Alajuela of Costa Rica on Wednesday night in the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals.

Thanks to Ben Olsen's goal in the closing seconds, United finally had something to cherish as it moved to the brink of an almost unimaginable trip to the world championships in Spain this summer.
