Article: A New St. John From Chicago // Russian Orthodox Priest Died in 1917

The Rev. John Kochurov, a revered priest who built Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral on the West Side and died a martyr, is now St. John.

The Russian Orthodox Church canonized Kochurov in ceremonies outside Moscow over the weekend.

"This binds us to the church and makes us closer to God," said Holy Trinity member Anatoly Bezkorovainy, who edited the church's centennial history book. "We have someone of our own who is in a special place with the Lord, and he prays for us."

Kochurov is the first Russian Orthodox saint from Chicago. Also canonized was the Rev. Alexander Khotovitsky, a missionary priest in New York. Kochurov previously was canonized by the Russian Church-in-Exile.
