Article: Navy Napalm Stockpile Poses Disposal Problem

FALLBROOK, Calif. In this quiet, pastoral corner of Southern California, the Navy is preparing to get rid of one of America's ugliest legacies of the Vietnam War: napalm.

About 23 million pounds of the sticky, flammable substance has been sitting in 35,100 green canisters at the Fallbrook Naval Weapons Station here for 20 years.

Some of the canisters have been leaking, at least 156 of them so badly that they had to be removed and incinerated, Navy officials said.

The toxic stockpile has some local residents frightened, but others are unfazed, accepting such hazards as the price they pay for the heavy concentration of military installations in San Diego County.
