Only one of these personalities never served as a guest host
for Johnny Carson. Which one?
When Johnny Carson retired from "The Tonight Show" on May 22,
1992, we saw the last of "Carnac the Magnificent" and the famous
tapping pencils. But we also saw the last of another honorable
tradition - the late night guest host.
The sorry state of guest host affairs came to mind during a
recent week of talk show reruns. There was Tom Hanks promoting
"Forrest Gump" on Leno, Rush Limbaugh looking smug on Letterman -
even though the Republican congressional victory was almost a year
away - and some comedian taking swipes at Lorena Bobbitt. Both the
politics and the jokes were past their expiration ...
