In a column in the Chicago Tribune titled "The Wife Problem"
(Nov. 27), author Adonis Hoffman wrote that Sen. Phil Gramm (R-Texas)
has no chance whatsoever of being elected president in 1996 because
his wife, Dr. Wendy Lee Gramm, is a Korean American.
Hoffman says the United States has rarely had a first lady with
an ethnicity other than a white Anglo American, and he believes the
value of American history lies in the fact that "precedent is
prologue to the future." If that were true, John F. Kennedy could
not have been elected president; after all, no Catholic presidents
preceded him. Nor could Ronald Reagan have been president; there
were no other divorced presidents before him.
