Tuberculosis is on the increase worldwide, and at least 3 million
people will die of it this year, according to a report to be released
today by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention.
Worldwide, the number of TB cases is expected to increase from
7.5 million in 1990 to nearly 9 million this year. The scientists
said that more than 10 million people will have TB annually by 2000,
and 3.5 million of them will die.
About 95 percent of all new TB cases occur in developing
countries, with the highest infection rates recorded in sub-Saharan
