When Andy Casagranda was supposed to be talking about all-season radials, he was talking instead about beta carotene and Vitamin E.

Casagranda, who quit the retail tire business to open the Natural Edge health store in Groton, Conn., is one of millions of Americans who swear by vitamin supplements.

Their belief is at the center of a debate among nutritionists and health care professionals over the benefits - even necessity - of vitamin supplements in a healthful diet.
