If a South Sider says with a wink and a smile that he is going to do
"the stations of the cross," chances are he doesn't have plans to
visit a church. More likely, he's headed to the stretch of Western
Avenue south of 99th Street where legions of fun-seekers collect
their blessings among the many bars and restaurants.
It's a diverse strip. The bars range from shot-and-beer places
to fancy joints where you can sip a slow-poured pint of Guinness.
Restaurant choices span the globe and the wallet; you can get a good,
cheap burger or a five-course Italian meal.
Although the area is popular year-round, it explodes for the
annual South Side Irish Parade the Sunday before St. Patrick's Day,
