THE STUDY AND RESULTS Aspirin can reduce the risk of a heart
attack, but it may also cause serious complications such as bleeding
from the stomach and hemorrhagic strokes. To assess the risks and
benefits of aspirin in preventing a first heart attack, British
researchers pooled data from four major international clinical
trials. The trials involved 48,000 people; none of them had had a
heart attack and more than 25,000 of them had been taking aspirin as
a preventive measure. The researchers found that while aspirin
reduced the risk of a first heart attack by almost a third, it also
increased the risk of bleeding and stroke by almost 70 percent. The
