Mazda's revamped Protege front-wheel-drive sedan has plenty of power and gobs of interior room, which are two key assets many subcompact cars lack.

Tucked under the hood of the $12,295 DX and $13,695 LX Protege models is a new, peppy 1.5-liter, 92-horsepower four-cylinder.

The engine is any car's heart, and the quiet, smooth 1.5 has dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder - instead of the usual two - for more efficient operation.

That engine can almost make you a stranger at gasoline stations because it delivers an EPA-estimated 31 m.p.g. in the city and 39 on highways with the standard five-speed manual transmission.
